Overview
The 25 April Bridge is a famous suspension bridge in Portugal. It connects Lisbon to Almada, across the Tagus River. The bridge opened in 1966. At first, it was named after the dictator Salazar. After the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, it was renamed to celebrate the return of democracy.
The bridge is 2.277 kilometers long. It is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its red color and similar design. It was built by the American Bridge Company, which also helped build the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.
Today, the 25 April Bridge carries cars and trains. It is one of the most important transport links in Portugal. It is also a symbol of freedom and change for the Portuguese people.
