Overview
Carmo square is located in the Chiado district of Lisbon, Portugal. It is known for its charming atmosphere, historic buildings, and important role in Portuguese history. The square is home to the Carmo Convent, a Gothic church partially destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, which now houses the Carmo Archaeological Museum.
Also famous for being the site where the Carnation Revolution reached its climax on April 25, 1974. During this peaceful military coup, the authoritarian Estado Novo regime came to an end. Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano surrendered to the revolutionary forces at the square.
