Overview
Commerce Square (in Portuguese, Praça do Comércio) is one of Lisbon’s most iconic and expansive public squares. Located near the Tagus River, it’s surrounded by impressive 18th-century buildings and features a large open space, making it a central hub in the city. Historically, it was the site of the royal palace before the 1755 earthquake. Afterward, it became the heart of Lisbon’s commercial activities, hence its name.
Today, it’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, with stunning views of the river, statues, and cafes lining the square. The majestic Arco da Rua Augusta (Arch of Augusta Street) stands as a prominent gateway into the square, and nearby landmarks like the Museu de Lisboa (Museum of Lisbon) add cultural significance. The square is a lively and essential part of Lisbon’s historical and modern identity.
