Overview
The Cristo Rei Statue is a large Christ the King statue located across the Tagus River from Lisbon. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue is 28 meters tall and sits on an 82-meter-high pedestal. From here, visitors can enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Lisbon.
The statue was finished in 1959. It was built as a symbol of peace and gratitude, especially for Portugal’s survival during World War II. Christ is depicted with outstretched arms, symbolizing protection and blessings over the city. The site also has a chapel at its base and a small park, making it a calm place to reflect and enjoy the view.
