Monastery of Jerónimos

Overview

The Monastery of Jerónimos (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) is a stunning example of Manueline architecture and one of Lisbon’s most important historical landmarks. Located in the Belém district, it was built in the early 16th century to honor Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its elaborate stone carvings, intricate cloisters, and grandiose design.

The monastery was originally home to the Hieronymite monks, who played a role in Portugal’s maritime history. Inside, visitors can explore the church, which houses the tombs of Vasco da Gama and other notable figures, as well as the peaceful, beautifully designed cloisters. Its architectural beauty and historical significance make the Monastery of Jerónimos a must-see attraction in Lisbon.
